Redneck Games: Come out Saturday and get your mud on

Nov 08, 2024Nov 08, 2024

You might be a redneck if:

-- You splish and splash in a puddle of mud.

-- You use your armpits to play popular songs.

-- You dip your noggin in a bucket of water, bobbin' for pig's feet.

-- And you occasionally yell to nearby folks, “Hey, y'all watch this” along the way.

Even if you didn't check yes to all of the above, the Redneck Games in Wellford gives everyone a chance to live the life of a redneck, at least for a day.

And for a good cause.

The Mid-City Shrine Club is hosting its annual fundraiser for the eighth consecutive year. The games — redneck horseshoes (played with a toilet lid), bobbin' for pigs' feet, armpit serenade, hog-calling contest and more — “git” going at 4 p.m Saturday, and proceeds benefit the Shrine Club, which helps support Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The After Five band will perform between games.

Debbie Edwards and her husband, Joel, both Shrine Club members, helped bring the Redneck Games to Spartanburg after attending a similar event in Georgia eight years ago. Debbie Edwards says the festivities have remained mostly unchanged over the years, and the crowd has remained constant.

“We have a lot of people come. It does pretty good,” Edwards said. “I'd say over 100 people come each year.”

It's truly a family affair, she said.

Those who attend usually wear old britches so they can jump in the mud pit, which Debbie says is one of the event's biggest draws.

“Everyone loves getting in the mud,” she said. “There's a belly flop contest toward the end.”

And if you think you're the biggest redneck of them all, you can enter either the Red Neck Woman or Red Neck Man contest.

Admission is $5 and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs.
